Speech and language therapy is provided by speech-language pathologists and focuses on understanding, expression, speech sounds, social communication, fluency, AAC, and some feeding needs. ABA (applied behaviour analysis) focuses on learning and behaviour: how skills are taught, how environments are arranged, and how behaviours that get in the way of learning are understood.
One is not a substitute for the other, and neither is universally the right starting point. The clinic offers both ABA therapy and speech and language therapy. How modern ABA practice is discussed in the clinic's own article is here: how modern ABA therapy has changed.
Updated 29 September 2026. Educational information from The Speech Clinic Dubai. It describes common concerns and what an assessment may involve. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an individual assessment.
Choose a speech assessment when the question is communication: not talking, hard-to-follow speech, language, AAC, or social use of language. The therapist works on those systems directly.
ABA is considered when the question is how a child learns skills across the day, or when behaviour is blocking participation at home, nursery, or in other therapies. It is not a speech-sound programme and it does not replace a language assessment.
Some autistic children, and some children with other developmental needs, have communication goals and learning or behaviour goals at the same time. In that case the speech-language pathologist leads communication targets, including AAC if it is used, and the ABA team supports teaching routines and participation. Goals should be shared so the child is not taught conflicting responses.
A child who only needs clearer speech sounds, stuttering support, or a language delay plan does not automatically need ABA. A child whose main need is daily learning support does not automatically need speech therapy if communication has already been assessed as age-appropriate.
No. ABA does not assess or treat speech-sound disorders, language disorders, fluency, or AAC systems in the way a speech-language pathologist does. Communication goals need that assessment even if a child also receives ABA.
No. Speech therapy does not replace a behaviour or learning programme when that is the identified need. The two services answer different questions.
No. Services follow the child's profile. Some children need speech therapy, some need other supports, and some need a coordinated plan. Diagnosis alone does not set the timetable.
Use the ABA therapy service page and the clinic article on how modern ABA therapy has changed. This page only compares roles with speech therapy.
Describe whether the main concern is communication, learning and behaviour, or both. The clinic can point you to speech therapy, ABA, or a plan that includes each where it is relevant.
